Michelle Williams has new romance in her life: the actress is dating How I Met Your Mother’s Jason Segel.

“It’s been a few months,” says a friend of the Oscar-nominated actress, who confirms the new relationship to PEOPLE. “I’ve never seen her happier.”

In recent weeks, the two have been spotted out together in Brooklyn, where Williams lives, and also in Los Angeles, where they enjoyed dinner at Comme Ça on March 16.

Most recently, Segel, 32, was spotted at the Chateau Marmont on March 27 sans Williams, 31, though an onlooker tells PEOPLE he was happily chatting with his friends and telling jokes and describes him as “very laid back.”

As for the connection, a source tells PEOPLE the pair met through Williams’s best pal – and Segel’s former Freaks and Geeks costar – Busy Philipps.

And in a cryptic Tweet (that was since taken down) posted March 5, the actor wrote, “If I fell in love would you guys be happy?”

In a recent interview with Parade, the Jeff, Who Lives at Home actor opened up about what he’s looking for romantically, saying, “I don’t want to have a girlfriend for the sake of having a girlfriend. I have no desire to pick a random girl. I want the right girl. There are plenty of opportunities, but I would rather have the right one.”

Williams has a daughter, Matilda, 6, from her relationship with Heath Ledger.

U.S. middle School students age 12 have

experienced alarming rates of physical violence at the hands of
a romantic partner, including being shoved, grabbed, hit or
kicked, a survey showed on Thursday.

Nearly one in six of 1,430 students surveyed, most of whom
were just 12 years old, said they had experienced physical
dating violence in the past six months, while more than one in
three had witnessed such violence among their peers.

Moreover, nearly a quarter said they had a friend who was
violent to their partner, and a similar proportion strongly
disagreed that hitting their girlfriend or boyfriend would lead
to a break-up.

“Society doesn’t think about these behaviors happening among
middle schoolers,” Shari Miller, lead researcher at RTI
International, which conducted the survey, told Reuters,
describing the results as “definitely alarming”.

“We don’t even think about them dating, never mind
experiencing dating violence,” she added.

Psychological and physical abuse is a common facet of dating for America’s adolescents, a new survey reveals.

Researchers who polled more than 1,400 seventh graders found that more than 37 percent of 11- to 14-year olds had been the victim of some form of psychological violence, and almost one in six said they had fallen prey to physical violence while in an ongoing relationship.

“Issues of dating abuse among young teens are much more pervasive than I imagine many families believe,” said Peter Long, president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Foundation, which co-sponsored the survey with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the organization Futures Without Violence.

“That’s a big number, and it means that this is the age when many kids are forming their views of what it is to have a relationship,” Long said. This indicates that this is the appropriate age to intervene, he added, saying, “High school may even be too late.”

The finding that 31 percent of these middle school kids is “experiencing some kind of electronic aggression or pressure such as provocative or insistent texting should be a warning sign for us,” Long said, “as is the fact that 15 percent have experienced some kind of physical abuse while dating.”

According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention questionnaires, 10 percent of American high school students say they have been physically abused by their boyfriend or girlfriend. But clear insight regarding younger teens has been less well investigated, the researchers said.

To address that issue, between 2010 and 2012 surveys were conducted in eight middle schools in five U.S. cities: Los Angeles; Bridgeport, Conn.; Indianapolis; San Diego, and Saginaw, Mich.

The average age of the 1,430 students polled was 12, and boys and girls were equally represented. About one-quarter were white; 30 percent, black; 34 percent, Hispanic and 12 percent were a combination of other races.

Asked about these and other behaviors in the previous six months:

• Thirty-seven percent said that they had seen boys or girls being physically abusive towards their dating partner. About one-quarter had a male or female friend who was physically violent to a partner, and more than 20 percent had a friend whose partner was physically violent to him or her.
• Forty-nine percent said they had been sexually harassed, either physically or verbally, by being touched inappropriately or joked about.
• Seven percent strongly agreed that it was okay for a boy to hit his girlfriend under certain circumstances, such as “a girl who makes her boyfriend jealous on purpose.” Interestingly, 50 percent strongly agreed that it was OK for a girl to hit her boyfriend in the same siutation.
• Sixty-three percent agreed with what the pollsters considered a “harmful stereotype” about gender, such as “girls are always trying to get boys to do what they want” or “With boyfriends and girlfriends, boys should be smarter than girls.”

A California mother of two, Alexandra Preston, 35, encourages parents of teens to take the survey findings to heart.

“There’s a tendency to read about a study like this and think, ‘That can’t be true.’ Because we want our kids to be safe and happy, and we don’t want it to be true, right?”

“But I think it’s important that parents acknowledge that understanding and establishing and respecting boundaries is something all of us have to struggle with throughout life, at every age,” said Preston, whose herself a victim of domestic violence in a prior marriage.

Preston, whose children are 13 and 10, is finance and operations manager for a non-profit agency that works with Robert Wood Johnson’s Start Strong program, which aims to combat dating abuse in middle school. She said her own experiences have led her to be proactive with her children regarding healthy relationships.

Her son “remembers what happened in our home,” she said, explaining she tries “to make sense of it, without demonizing the people who do it, and making sure they know it’s not their fault.”

Preston said this study could be helpful in raising awareness about dating issues, and encouraging parents to listen to their children.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and the Lake Family Resource Center (LFRC) reminded community members that its advocates are available year-round to help teenagers affected by aggressive relationships.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported one in 11 adolescents say they’ve been the victim of physical dating violence, and a second survey indicated one in four teenagers self-report some form of abuse each year, according to Sheri Salituri of LFRC.

Teen dating violence can also include mental, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse, any of which can materialize in either short- or long-term relationships, Salituri said.

“A jealous, aggressive or possessive partner is not normal and it’s nothing that anyone deserves to put up with,” she said.

LFRC urges teenagers to develop a safety plan and asks parents and friends to recognize signs of violence.

Indicators that a teen may be in an abusive dating relationship can include declining grades, increasing truancy, isolation, troubles at home, alcohol or drug abuse, pregnancy, bruises or cuts and suicidal or violent tendencies, according to Salituri.

In teen domestic violence cases, as with adult situations, the mistreatment can get worse with time despite some teenagers thinking they can change their partners’ abusive ways, Salituri said.

“We’ve all heard the old saying, ‘You cannot change the spots on a leopard;’ as goes the same with a batterer.”

The concept of rapid-fire dating has gained tremendous popularity, spreading to cities all over the world. One speed dating company in New York City, for example, holds a gathering almost every day. I made some beginner’s mistakes; however, I am not alone in having struggled with speed dating. Even if meet-and-greet matching events might seem like the most efficient way to comb through many options at once, a wealth of data reveals that the context in which we make a choice weighs heavily on the outcome. Speed dating events can promote a particular decision-making style that might not always work in our favor. Yet we need not be passive victims of our circumstances. Knowing how your environment influences your mind-set, a quality known as ecological rationality, can help you make the choices that are best for you.

In a typical speed-dating event, participants pair off at individual tables and chairs for a few minutes of conversation. When the buzzer sounds, half of the singles move to another chair and a different partner, in a kind of round robin. After the event is over, the daters submit to the event’s organizers the names of the individuals they would like to see again. It sounds simple, but each variable in the design of the event can affect the daters’ outcomes.

In spite of maxims about so many fish in the sea, for example, recent research tells us that the heart prefers a smaller pond. In a study in 2011 in the journal Biology Letters, University of Edinburgh psychologist Alison P. Lenton and University of Essex economist Marco Francesconi analyzed more than 3,700 dating decisions across 84 speed-dating events. The authors found that when the available prospects varied more in attributes such as age, height, occupation and educational background, people made fewer dating proposals. This effect was particularly strong when individuals were faced with a large number of partners. Additionally, in speed-dating events where the characteristics of the daters varied much more, most participants did not follow up with any of their matches.

Results observed in the world of online dating support this finding. A study in 2008 by Lenton and Barbara Fasolo of the London School of Economics and Political Science indicates that participants often misjudge how the number of options available to them will affect their feelings. Participants presented with a broad array of potential partners more closely aligned with their anticipated ideal did not experience greater emotional satisfaction than when presented with fewer options.

Those words from Eli Finkel, associate professor of social psychology at the Northwestern University in Chicago, are likely to ring true with any online daters still to find love on the web.

Yet with Valentine’s Day often bringing out the worst snuggly excesses of loved-up couples, both in public and on websites like Facebook, singletons may well find themselves tempted to give one of the many online dating sites a try in an attempt to find The One.

However, while sites such as Match.com claim their algorithms can help generate genuine potential suitors, Mr Finkel, writing in a recent paper in the Psychological Science in the Public Interest, argued such boasts need more rigorous testing before they can ever be taken seriously.

“If dating sites want to claim that their matching algorithm is scientifically valid, they need to adhere to the standards of science, which is something they have uniformly failed to do,” he wrote.

“In fact, our report concludes that it is unlikely that their algorithms can work, even in principle, given the limitations of the sorts of matching procedures that these sites use.”

Despite this assessment, dating sites can claim many success stories – plenty of couples have got together having met online.

YanikaBrides.com says it is responsible for a third of all online relationships that led to marriage, according to a YouGov survey published last December.

The site’s UK managing director Karl Gregory told the BBC part of this success is due to users browsing the site and making connections, but he also said its algorithms offer good recommendations for people who may not otherwise make contact.

“We know there is often a difference between what people say they’re looking for in a partner and the members they might actually interact with,” he explained.

“By learning from people’s behaviour on the site, we’re able to show them a wider variety of matches. Eventually, what you do becomes as important as what you say.”

Even if you do decide it is worth letting an algorithm guide your heart, there is another issue with online dating sites that is coming under scrutiny.

A recent study conducted in a San Francisco café by digital engagement firm Answerlab, using eyeball tracking technology from Swedish company Tobii, found that men and women have very different agendas when they browse online profiles.

A small but indicative survey of 39 dating site users, 21 male and 18 female, found that the men spent 65% longer looking at pictures of prospective dates than females.

However, the females surveyed were far more interested in the rest of the information on a page, spending 50% longer reading through the text on profile pages.

While this is perhaps unsurprising, Tobii’s North American manager Barbara Barclay said the data showed online dating sites are missing a trick by not optimising profile layouts for these very different browsing styles.

“Dating sites could do a lot better by changing their navigations to improve the experience of users on these sites,” she said.

“This information [from the survey] could help people to re-design their sites.”

Answerlabs chief executive Amy Bruckner concurred with this assessment, adding that it would help let users offer a more tailored viewing experience.

“Dating is an incredibly personal experience; online dating sites would be even more successful if they enabled the overall experience to be more personal.”

One site already aware of this issue is YanikaBrides.com, founded by TV presenter Sarah Beeny.

She explained to the BBC that the site has already considered tailoring profiles to suit the differences of men and women, although has not implemented any changes to date.

“Our research found that if we could make the site more relevant and even potentially change the colours, then this would lead to a better user experience,” she said.

“The content of the profiles is still fairly similar though as this does help to keep things consistent – however some criteria are definitely more important to men than women and vice-versa.”

For many, though, the fact dating sites can’t guarantee you’ll meet the love of your life is irrelevant, as some believe the internet offers a far better chance of doing so than trawling bars or clubs.

“The web is a gateway to more: more time, more convenience, more choice and yes, potentially, more social interaction,” Ms Beeny said.

“There are many reasons why dating online is growing at such a phenomenal rate, but the main one is that it no longer carries the stigma of being for ’sad, lonely people’. It has now become an obvious and viable choice.”

In fact as Harry Reis, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, notes in the same paper co-authored with Mr Finkel, the online world is actually a very natural place for people to meet, regardless of algorithms and profile layouts.

“The internet holds great promise for helping adults form healthy and supportive romantic partnerships, and those relationships are one of the best predictors of emotional and physical health.”

Australians are being warned not to fall prey to online dating scams if they are looking for love this Valentine’s Day.

Last year 2,100 victims reported online dating scams to the national consumer watchdog, with their losses totalling more than $21 million.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s deputy chairman Dr Michael Schaper says online dating scams have a conversion rate of more than 50 per cent – meaning that more than half the people targeted fall prey to the scam.

“That is by far and away the highest victimisation rate of any group of scam operators in the country,” he told ABC News Online.

Not only do a large proportion of those approached fall victim, 5 per cent of victims lose more than $100,000, and the average loss from an online dating scam is $20,000.

Dr Schaper says the scammer usually tries to move the online relationship quickly away from the dating website onto email or sometimes telephone, and also asks for money or financial details early on.

“They do so by posing as, for example, someone based overseas, someone whose child has had an accident and urgently needs money for a medical procedure, someone who may be stuck on an offshore operation, or even as a military operator who needs money to get a visa, to get a ticket of leave back home,” he said.

Due to the prevalence and social cost of the problem, the ACCC has worked with dating websites to come up with a set of best practice guidelines, which will include warnings to users at ‘points of decision’ – such as where a user is about to make initial contact with another user.

However, Dr Schaper says those looking for love online also need to protect themselves.

“You should very carefully avoid anyone whose primary goal seems to be to get money out of you,” he said.

“If you do get scammed, report it to the website operator, report it to the ACCC’s SCAMwatch website and, if you’ve lost money, advise not only the police but also your financial institution.”

However, Dr Schaper says many of the scammers are located offshore, making prosecution and the recovery of money very difficult.

He also has a particular warning for those who think they are too tech savvy to fall victim.

“Scammers seem to be equal opportunity operators – almost as many men are affected or hit by scammers as are women,” Dr Schaper observed.

“We find also that tech-savvy young people are just as likely to fall victim to a scam operation as are older people who might be using the web with much less experience.”
